Primary School SRE

What is SRE? 

SRE is short for Special Religious Education. Distinct from general religious education (GRE) in which children learn about multiple faiths and cultures which is part of normal classroom lessons, SRE provides specific education about a nominate faith system. This may be Christian however in many school there are other faith based SRE class. SRE is generally taught by people who represent their faith, are authorised, trained and may be voluntary or paid.

Do all children participate in SRE?

No, not all children participate in SRE. Only children whose parents have nominated for them to participate in SRE participate. 

What do children learn in SRE?

Children completing SRE provided through the TBCE are taught the basics of the Christian faith. They are taught about Jesus Christ and many of the stories found in the bible are shared. The curriculum used is called Godspace, and more information about the curriculum can be found here

Who teaches SRE?

All SRE teachers in our primary schools are authorised volunteers form the local churches. In being authorised teachers have undertaken SRE teacher training and completed the necessary working with children' checks. 

How would my child have SRE?

All schools on the Tomaree peninsula, in line with the government legislation surrounding SRE, provide for a 30minute lesson once a week. 

Curriculum

The same curriculum is used by all teachers to teach SRE across all of the primary schools on the Tomaree peninsula. The approved and accredited curriculum is called 'GodSpace'. If you would like further information please visit GodSpace.org.au
